María Moctezuma
A Mexican singer-songwriter representative of the new folklore movement.
Originally from the State of Tabasco , her roots extend throughout Latin America and the world. The daughter of parents from Veracruz, she grew up between Tabasco and Veracruz, moved to Yucatán in 2005, and in 2023 lived between Mérida and Augsburg, Germany.
Influenced by the cultures of her ancestors and the strong presence of Mayan culture in Yucatán, she maintains a deep connection to her roots, which inspired her to create a new musical genre she calls “Sonido Raizoso”, the sound of the roots.
María Moctezuma has composed the music and lyrics for her four albums, available on all digital platforms, establishing herself as one of the leading figures in contemporary Mexican music on local, national, and international stages and festivals.
In 2012, she participated in the documentary HECHO EN MÉXICO (Made in Mexico), directed by British filmmaker Duncan Bridgeman.
In her concerts, María offers a fresh, profound, and fusion-filled sound that reflects the voice and thoughts of an authentic, determined woman with strong roots, accompanied by contemporary Latin American rhythms and instruments from indigenous cultures. Bossa Nova/Cumbia, Pre-Hispanic/Rock, or Pop/Reggae, along with the sound of a clay ocarina or a ceremonial conch shell, are some of the surprises with which María captivates her audience.
